Tips to ensure a happy home improvement

Your greatest investment is your home. When it comes to making a home improvement, and selecting a contractor, proceed with carefulness. Avoid being a victim of unscrupulous contractors like the 1,200 people who reported about such to the New York Attorney General Office in 2011. Here are some tips compiled from the Attorney General and Better Business Bureau to help you make a good contractor decision.

Choosing a contractor

Know what you want done and find out if building permits are needed.
Get estimates and interview at least a couple (if not few) contractors.
Get and check references from former customers, and check the business accreditation with the Better Business Bureau at http://upstateny.bbb.org

Once you have selected a contractor

Get proof of insurances. Do not leave yourself liable.
Get everything in writing! State law requires contractors provide written contracts to include payment schedule, time frame, detailed description of job and materials, and a third day cancellation clause and more.
Never pay the full price up front, but do expect to pay 1/3 to 1/2 job deposit, for which a contractor must be bonded or tell you where that money will be deposited in escrow.

Avoid contractors that will not abide by these conditions, even if they seem reputable. It’s not worth the risk to your home and finances!
